THE LIZARD BRAIN
One of our key interests at Rewire is understanding and utilizing the connections between an individual’s brain and their work.
One developing area of research relates to an aspect of the mind that doctors and scientists refer to as the Lizard Brain.
This light-hearted term was created to describe the similarities and functionality our brain shares with that of reptiles, more commonly known as the most primitive needs of survival: food, shelter, comfort, etc. Overall, we all agree survival is good, and in order to survive, the lizard brain subconsciously does these four things very effectively:
The lizard brain looks for familiarity
The lizard brain searches to be right
The lizard brain establishes habits
The lizard brain looks to control
These same four components can also be building blocks to positive change. For instance, familiarity is good until we realize that growth and development often come from unfamiliar experiences. Within companies and individuals everywhere, this same dynamic is at play with all aspects of the Lizard Brain: it keeps us alive.
What if you want more than just survival?
What if you and your organization want to authentically grow into something better?
